Best US cities for low-cost retirement

Jim_SamsonOne of the most basic benefits of retirement that everyone should get to enjoy is no longer worrying about money. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case for a lot of new retirees.

Many people are now entering retirement with a cloud of fear hanging over their heads because they aren’t totally sure their money will last.

But a secret of retirement is that where you retire can be the difference between a happy, comfortable life beyond the working years and a stressful one.

That’s why I’ve done some research in order to bring you 5 of the cheapest U.S. cities to retire in…

5. Tulsa, Oklahoma

As a sooner city, Tulsa offers financial perks like no state estate tax, no social security income tax. Plus, the cost of living in this city is around 11.5% below the national average.

And with low unemployment, you’ll have a big advantage if you would like to keep working in some capacity in retirement.

4. Tampa, Florida

If you’re looking for a cheaper retirement location option that still includes a lot of attractions, Tampa could be your perfect destination.

With a cost of living that’s roughly 7.5% below the national average, Tampa is very affordable. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up fun to live there…

First of all, this city provides easy access to the beach and lakes. And beyond that, Tampa and its surrounding towns offer plenty of sporting, cultural, and other entertainment to enjoy. Plus, Orlando’s theme parks aren’t too far away.

3. Rockport, Texas

One thing to consider when entering retirement is whether or not you’d like to live with people around the same age. If you do, then Rockport is likely the best retirement spot for you.

Over 28% of the population in this thriving retirement community is over the age of 65, but that doesn’t mean boring. The big city amenities are readily available in Corpus Christi, which is where Rockport is located just outside of.

2. Indianapolis, Indiana

With a big-city feel and small-town prices, Indianapolis has a very low cost of living at a whopping 12.8% below the national average. Easy access to healthcare just adds to the list of benefits, and you get to enjoy everything that a vibrant city like that has to offer.

1. Omaha, Nebraska

Low unemployment, access to healthcare, good community outreach, and easy transportation make the beautiful city of Omaha a great place to live. And that’s without even mentioning the art, music, great weather, gorgeous river, and more.

And the financial conditions are great with the cost of living being over 11% below the national average.
