Are you productive or just busy?

Sean BowerThere’s a secret to becoming 50% more productive right now, and it’s nothing more than identifying the very real difference between being productive and just being busy.

This is a lesson that took me a long time to learn, but when I finally did, I immediately became immensely more productive in my career.

The great news is that you can learn that lesson right now…

Unfortunately for me, I had to learn on my own that just because I was busy, it didn’t mean I was being productive. Luckily for you, I’m going to teach you that lesson right now just by explaining the differences between a productive person and a busy person…

1. Priorities

A busy person has many priorities, but a productive person has few.

Think about your tasks during a day or week. Are all of them productive, or are some ‘busy work’? Checking and answering emails shouldn’t be a priority. While it may need to be done, it doesn’t make you productive.

Instead of having a dozen things to do each day, the productive person focuses on the 2 or 3 main priorities that will really make a difference.

2. A Mission

This is probably the most inherent difference between the productive person and the busy person – a busy person makes it look like he has a mission, but a productive person really does have a mission.

I think at one time or another, we’re all guilty of trying to make ourselves look busy to impress others, but that’s a bad habit to get into. To be productive, you have to have a clearly defined goal that you’re working towards every single day.

3. Talking

A busy person loves to talk about how busy they are and how little time they have for themselves, but a productive person let’s their results do the talking and always has time for the important things.

We all have that friend who constantly complains about not having enough time in the day, but clearly isn’t productive. This is another thing most of us are guilty of doing at some point.

But if you want to be productive, start letting your results speak for you. When you have a mission, limit your priorities, become truly productive, it will become blatantly apparent that you’re making strides and gaining on your goals.
