I could write a book listing everything you need in a home business (in fact, I have), but if you’ve never owned a successful business before, there are 4 “Must Haves” you should give ALL your attention.
You can have all the business gadgets, tools, and technology in the world, but without these 4 things, your business won’t take off…
Are you ready…?
Must Have #1 – Need
Whether you’re selling a product or a service, the only way you’ll be able to get your new home business off the ground is by finding out if there is need for it.
This can come in a few different forms.
Maybe the service or product you’re offering already exists elsewhere, but there’s a strong need for it in a specific location. Maybe that location had the product/service but the old business failed because they didn’t have the other 3 “Must Haves”.
It could be an innovational product/service that people don’t quite yet know that they need, but your numbers prove they will.
Or maybe you invest in strong marketing and you’re able to convince people that they need your product/service.
In any circumstance, there must be a consumer need for your product/service for it to prosper.
Must Have #2– Experience
Any strong business is built on experience, but don’t be scared away by this one. You can always find any experience that you lack.
First you need to fully understand where your experience lies. What are you used to dealing with? Are you good with numbers? Is there a certain type of product you tend to buy, but could possibly improve?
Experience comes in many forms. A more general form of experience is people skills. Just because you may have never had a customer before, doesn’t mean you lack people (or customer service) skills.
Chances are, you’ve been dealing with people your whole life—customers are no different.
As I mentioned earlier, if you lack the experience, borrow it.
You can hire people to take care of the tasks that you aren’t familiar with, as long as they’re within your budget.
Must Have #3– Resources
In a sense, this could tie in with the borrowing of experience, but it’s a little more complex than that.
Having the right resources comes with building your best possible team. It could be you and one other person as long as you both cover all the resources needed for your product/service.
The most successful businesspeople are the first to admit that they can’t do everything themselves. They all have a team of professionals, and they all participate in other peoples’ teams if necessary.
We all want the same thing: success—so, why not help each other get there?
Must Have #4 – A Business Model
The term “business model” usually scares people from venturing into entrepreneurship, but it’s not as complicated as it sounds.
If you have a product/service in mind, and you’ve set yourself some realistic goals, then you already have the rough draft of your business model. You just need to get it down on paper.
A business model is essentially your 5- to 10-year plan for your business. What goals will you accomplish in that time? How much do you expect to do in sales? What new products/services do you plan to introduce? How many employees do you expect to hire?
Your business model can never be too long if everything involved is pertinent to your business operations.
All four “Must Haves” are equally as important as each other, and if just one of them isn’t functioning properly, your business will struggle to take off.
But if you place as much focus on each of these 4 “Must Haves” as possible, you’ll soon be able to kick-start your business and grow it into the prosperous empire you’ve been searching for.
